Isaiah 34-36Philippians 4Proverbs 23

Isaiah 34

1Come near, you nations, to hear! Listen, you peoples. Let the earth and all it contains hear; the world, and everything that comes from it.

2For the Lord is enraged against all the nations, and angry with all their armies. He has utterly destroyed them. He has given them over for slaughter.

3Their slain will also be cast out, and the stench of their dead bodies will come up; and the mountains will melt in their blood.

4All of the army of the sky will be dissolved. The sky will be rolled up like a scroll, and all its armies will fade away, as a leaf fades from off a vine or a fig tree.

5For my sword has drunk its fill in the sky. Behold, it will come down on Edom, and on the people of my curse, for judgment.

6The Lord's sword is filled with blood. It is covered with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams; for the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

7The wild oxen will come down with them, and the young bulls with the mighty bulls; and their land will be drunken with blood, and their dust made greasy with fat.

8For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.

9Its streams will be turned into pitch, its dust into sulfur, And its land will become burning pitch.

10It won't be quenched night nor day. Its smoke will go up forever. From generation to generation, it will lie waste. No one will pass through it forever and ever.

11But the pelican and the porcupine will possess it. The owl and the raven will dwell in it. He will stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.

12They shall call its nobles to the kingdom, but none shall be there; and all its princes shall be nothing.

13Thorns will come up in its palaces, nettles and thistles in its fortresses; and it will be a habitation of jackals, a court for ostriches.

14The wild animals of the desert will meet with the wolves, and the wild goat will cry to his fellow. Yes, the night creature shall settle there, and shall find herself a place of rest.

15The arrow snake will make her nest there, and lay, hatch, and gather under her shade. Yes, the kites will be gathered there, every one with her mate.

16Search in the book of the Lord, and read: not one of these will be missing. None will lack her mate. For my mouth has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.

17He has cast the lot for them, and his hand has divided it to them with a measuring line. They shall possess it forever. From generation to generation they will dwell in it.

Isaiah 35

1The wilderness and the dry land will be glad. The desert will rejoice and blossom like a rose.

2It will blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing. Lebanon's glory Lebanon will be given to it, the excellence of Carmel and Sharon. They will see the Lord's glory, the excellence of our God.

3Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.

4Tell those who have a fearful heart, "Be strong. Do not be afraid. Behold, your God will come with vengeance, God's retribution. He will come and save you.

5Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.

6Then the lame man will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute will sing; for waters will break out in the wilderness, and streams in the desert.

7The burning sand will become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water. Grass with reeds and rushes will be in the habitation of jackals, where they lay.

8A highway will be there, a road, and it will be called The Holy Way. The unclean shall not pass over it, but it will be for those who walk in the Way. Wicked fools will not go there.

9No lion will be there, nor will any ravenous animal go up on it. They will not be found there; but the redeemed will walk there.

10The Lord's ransomed ones will return, and come with singing to Zion; and everlasting joy will be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing will flee away."

Isaiah 36

1Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.

2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller's field highway.

3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him.

4Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, "What confidence is this in which you trust?

5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?

6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

7But if you tell me, 'We trust in the Lord our God,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'"

8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.

9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

10Have I come up now without the Lord against this land to destroy it? The Lord said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."'"

11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."

12But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?"

13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!

14Thus says the king, 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.

15Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, "The Lord will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."'

16Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;

17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "The Lord will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?

19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"

21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him."

22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

Philippians 4

1Therefore, my brothers, beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand firm in the Lord, my beloved.

2I exhort Euodia, and I exhort Syntyche, to think the same way in the Lord.

3Yes, I beg you also, true yokefellow, help these women, for they labored with me in the Good News, with Clement also, and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

4Rejoice in the Lord always! Again I will say, Rejoice!

5Let your gentleness be known to all men. The Lord is near.

6In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

7And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

8Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things.

9The things which you learned, received, heard, and saw in me: do these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

10But I rejoice in the Lord greatly, that now at length you have revived your thought for me; in which you did indeed take thought, but you lacked opportunity.

11Not that I speak in respect to lack, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it.

12I know how to be humbled, and I know also how to abound. In everything and in all things I have learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in need.

13I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

14However you did well that you shared in my affliction.

15You yourselves also know, you Philippians, that in the beginning of the Good News, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you only.

16For even in Thessalonica you sent once and again to my need.

17Not that I seek for the gift, but I seek for the fruit that increases to your account.

18But I have all things, and abound. I am filled, having received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable and well-pleasing sacrifice to God.

19My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

20Now to our God and Father be the glory forever and ever! Amen.

21Greet every holy one in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you.

22All the saints greet you, especially those who are of Caesar's household.

23The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Proverbs 23

1When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;

2put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite.

3Do not be desirous of his dainties, seeing they are deceitful food.

4Do not weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.

5Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.

6Do not eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and do not crave his delicacies:

7for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

8The morsel which you have eaten you shall vomit up, and lose your good words.

9Do not speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.

10Do not move the ancient boundary stone. Do not encroach on the fields of the fatherless:

11for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.

12Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

13Do not withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.

14Punish him with the rod, and save his soul from Sheol.

15My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine:

16yes, my heart will rejoice, when your lips speak what is right.

17Do not let your heart envy sinners; but rather fear the Lord all the day long.

18Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.

19Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!

20Do not be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat:

21for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.

22Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.

23Buy the truth, and do not sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.

24The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.

25Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!

26My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.

27For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.

28Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.

29Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.

31Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.

32In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.

33Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.

34Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:

35"They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I do not feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I can find another."
