Genesis 13-15Matthew 5Psalms 5Proverbs 5

Genesis 13

Abram went up out of Egypt: he, his wife, all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negev.

Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

He went on his journeys from the Negev even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

to the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first. There Abram called on the name of the Lord.

Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

The land was not able to bear them, that they might live together: for their substance was great, so that they could not live together.

There was a strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite lived in the land at that time.

Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no strife between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are relatives.

Isn't the whole land before you? Please separate yourself from me. If you go to the left hand, then I will go to the right. Or if you go to the right hand, then I will go to the left."

Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar.

So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom.

Now the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinners against the Lord.

The Lord said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, "Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

for all the land which you see, I will give to you, and to your offspring forever.

I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then your seed may also be numbered.

Arise, walk through the land in its length and in its breadth; for I will give it to you."

Abram moved his tent, and came and lived by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built an altar there to the Lord.

Genesis 14

It happened in the days of Amraphel, king of Shinar, Arioch, king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer, king of Elam, and Tidal, king of Goiim,

that they made war with Bera, king of Sodom, and with Birsha, king of Gomorrah, Shinab, king of Admah, and Shemeber, king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar).

All these joined together in the valley of Siddim (the same is the Salt Sea).

Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year, they rebelled.

In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer came, and the kings who were with him, and struck the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim,

and the Horites in their Mount Seir, to Elparan, which is by the wilderness.

They returned, and came to En Mishpat (the same is Kadesh), and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that lived in Hazazon Tamar.

The king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar) went out; and they set the battle in array against them in the valley of Siddim;

against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five.

Now the valley of Siddim was full of tar pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there, and those who remained fled to the hills.

They took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food, and went their way.

They took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who lived in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

One who had escaped came and told Abram, the Hebrew. Now he lived by the oaks of Mamre, the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were allies of Abram.

When Abram heard that his relative was taken captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan.

He divided himself against them by night, he and his servants, and struck them, and pursued them to Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

He brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative, Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

The king of Sodom went out to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, at the valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley).

Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine: and he was priest of God Most High.

He blessed him, and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth:

and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." Abram gave him a tenth of all.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people, and take the goods to yourself."

Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted up my hand to the Lord, God Most High, possessor of heaven and earth,

that I will not take a thread nor a sandal strap nor anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich.'

I will accept nothing from you except that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. Let them take their portion."

Genesis 15

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward."

Abram said, "Lord God, what will you give me, seeing I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?"

Abram said, "Behold, to me you have given no seed: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir."

Behold, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, "This man will not be your heir, but he who will come forth out of your own body will be your heir."

The Lord brought him outside, and said, "Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." He said to Abram, "So shall your seed be."

He believed in the Lord; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness.

He said to him, "I am the Lord who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."

He said, "Lord God, how will I know that I will inherit it?"

He said to him, "Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon."

He brought him all of these, and divided them in the middle, and laid each half opposite the other; but he did not divide the birds.

The birds of prey came down on the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

When the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. Now terror and great darkness fell on him.

He said to Abram, "Know for sure that your seed will live as foreigners in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them. They will afflict them four hundred years.

I will also judge that nation, whom they will serve. Afterward they will come out with great wealth,

but you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried in a good old age.

In the fourth generation they will come here again, for the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet full."

It came to pass that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch passed between these pieces.

In that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, "To your seed I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates:

the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites,

the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim,

the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

Matthew 5

And seeing the multitudes, he went up onto the mountain, and when he had sat down, his disciples came to him.

Then he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

"Blessed are you when men insult you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

"You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.

You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill cannot be hidden.

Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.

Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

For truly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the Law, until all things are accomplished.

Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.

For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

"You have heard that it was said to the ancient ones, 'You shall not murder;' and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.'

But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing!' shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of the fire of hell.

"If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,

leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him in the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.

Truly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery;'

but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

And if your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

"It was also said, 'Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,'

but I tell you that whoever puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries her when she is put away commits adultery.

"Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,'

but I tell you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;

nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

Neither shall you swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes' and your 'No' be 'No.' Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'

But I tell you, do not resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

And if anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.

And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

Give to him who asks you, and do not turn away him who desires to borrow from you.

"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.'

But I tell you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you,

that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.

For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

And if you only greet your brothers, what more do you do than others? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

Therefore you shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Psalms 5

Give ear to my words, Lord. Consider my meditation.

Listen to the voice of my cry, my King and my God; for to you do I pray.

Lord, in the morning you shall hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.

For you are not a God who has pleasure in wickedness. Evil can't live with you.

The arrogant shall not stand in your sight. You hate all workers of iniquity.

You will destroy those who speak lies. The Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

But as for me, in the abundance of your loving kindness I will come into your house. I will bow toward your holy temple in reverence of you.

Lead me, Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies. Make your way straight before my face.

For there is no faithfulness in their mouth. Their heart is destruction. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongue they are deceitful.

Hold them guilty, God. Let them fall by their own counsels; Thrust them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against you.

But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice, Let them always shout for joy, because you defend them. Let them also who love your name be joyful in you.

For you will bless the righteous. Lord, you will surround him with favor as with a shield.

Proverbs 5

My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding:

that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge.

For the lips of an adulteress drip honey. Her mouth is smoother than oil,

But in the end she is as bitter as wormwood, and as sharp as a two-edged sword.

Her feet go down to death. Her steps lead straight to Sheol.

She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn't know it.

Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Do not depart from the words of my mouth.

Remove your way far from her. Do not come near the door of her house,

lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one;

lest strangers feast on your wealth, and your labors enrich another man's house.

You will groan at your latter end, when your flesh and your body are consumed,

and say, "How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor turned my ear to those who instructed me!

I have come to the brink of utter ruin, in the midst of the gathered assembly."

Drink water out of your own cistern, running water out of your own well.

Should your springs overflow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares?

Let them be for yourself alone, not for strangers with you.

Let your spring be blessed. Rejoice in the wife of your youth.

A loving doe and a graceful deer- let her breasts satisfy you at all times. Be captivated always with her love.

For why should you, my son, be captivated with an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom of another?

For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord. He examines all his paths.

The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare him. The cords of his sin hold him firmly.

He will die for lack of instruction. In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.
