Judges 6-8John 5Psalms 73Proverbs 11

Judges 6

1And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

2And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel; and because of Midian the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and the caves, and the strongholds.

3And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them.

4And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, as far as Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, as well as sheep, or ox, or donkey.

5For they came up with their livestock and their tents; they would come in like locusts in number; both they and their camels were without number, and they came into the land to ravage it.

6Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to the Lord.

7It happened, when the children of Israel cried to the Lord because of Midian,

8that the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel, and he said to them, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

9and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out from before you, and gave you their land;

10and I said to you, "I am the Lord your God; you shall not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell." But you have not listened to my voice.'"

11The angel of the Lord came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12The angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, "The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!"

13Gideon said to him, "Oh, my lord, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? Where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, 'Didn't the Lord bring us up from Egypt?' But now the Lord has cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian."

14The Lord looked at him, and said, "Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven't I sent you?"

15He said to him, "O Lord, how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house."

16The Lord said to him, "Surely I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man."

17He said to him, "If now I have found favor in your sight, then show me a sign that it is you who talk with me.

18Please do not go away, until I come to you, and bring out my present, and lay it before you." He said, "I will wait until you come back."

19Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal: the meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out to him under the oak, and presented it.

20The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so.

21Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there went up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight.

22Gideon saw that he was the angel of the Lord; and Gideon said, "Alas, Lord God! Because I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!"

23The Lord said to him, "Peace be to you! Do not be afraid. You shall not die."

24Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it "The Lord is Peace." To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25It happened the same night, that the Lord said to him, "Take your father's bull, even the second bull seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the Asherah that is beside it;

26and build an altar to the Lord your God on the top of this stronghold, in the orderly manner, and take the second bull, and offer a burnt offering with the wood of the Asherah which you shall cut down."

27Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord had spoken to him: and it came about, because he feared his father's household and the men of the city, so that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28When the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah was cut down that was by it, and the second bull was offered on the altar that was built.

29They said one to another, "Who has done this thing?" When they inquired and asked, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing."

30Then the men of the city said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has broken down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the Asherah that was by it."

31Joash said to all who stood against him, "Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death while it is yet morning: if he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar."

32Therefore on that day he named him Jerubbaal, saying, "Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar."

33Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east assembled themselves together; and they crossed over, and encamped in the Valley of Jezreel.

34But the Spirit of the Lord came on Gideon; and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered together after him.

35He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; and they also were gathered together after him: and he sent messengers to Asher, and to Zebulun, and to Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36Gideon said to God, "If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken,

37behold, I will put a fleece of wool on the threshing floor; if there is dew on the fleece only, and it is dry on all the ground, then shall I know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have spoken."

38It was so; for he rose up early on the next day, and pressed the fleece together, and wrung the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

39Gideon said to God, "Do not let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make one more test with the fleece; let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew."

40God did so that night, for it was dry on the fleece only, and there was dew all over the ground.

Judges 7

1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early, and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

2The Lord said to Gideon, "The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, 'My own hand has saved me.'

3Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, 'Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.' There returned of the people twenty-two thousand; but ten thousand remained.

4The Lord said to Gideon, "The people are yet too many; bring them down to the water, and I will try them for you there: and it shall be, that of whom I tell you, This shall go with you, the same shall go with you; and of whoever I tell you, This shall not go with you, the same shall not go.

5So he brought down the people to the water: and the Lord said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, him you shall set by himself; likewise everyone who kneels down on his knees to drink."

6The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men: but all the rest of the people kneeled down on their knees to drink water.

7The Lord said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand; and let all the people go every man to his home."

8So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the men of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the three hundred men. And the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

9It happened the same night, that the Lord said to him, "Arise, get down into the camp; for I have delivered it into your hand.

10But if you fear to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp:

11and you shall hear what they say; and afterward will your hands be strengthened to go down into the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp.

12The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as numerous as the sand which is on the seashore.

13When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his friend; and he said, "Behold, I had a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, and came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent collapsed."

14His friend answered, "This is nothing less than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. Into his hand God has delivered Midian, and all the army."

15It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and its interpretation, that he worshiped, and he returned into the camp of Israel, and said, "Get up, for the Lord has delivered into your hand the army of Midian."

16He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets, and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers.

17He said to them, "Look at me, and do likewise. And behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.

18When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, "For the Lord and for Gideon."

19So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands.

20The three companies blew the trumpets, and broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they called out, "The sword of the Lord and of Gideon.'"

21They each stood in his place every man around the camp; and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight.

22They blew the three hundred trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.

23The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after Midian.

24Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, "Come down against Midian, and capture the waters, as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan." So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together, and seized the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.

25They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and they killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian: and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.

Judges 8

1The men of Ephraim said to him, "Why have you done such a thing to us, not calling us when you went to fight with Midian?" And they argued with him fiercely.

2He said to them, "What have I now done in comparison with you? Isn't the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3God has delivered into your hand the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb; and what was I able to do in comparison with you?" Then their anger subsided toward him, when he had said that.

4Gideon came to the Jordan, and passed over, he, and the three hundred men who were with him, exhausted, yet pursuing.

5He said to the men of Succoth, "Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me; for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian. "

6The princes of Succoth said, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?"

7Gideon said, "Therefore when the Lord has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers."

8He went up there to Penuel, and spoke to them in like manner; and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered.

9He spoke also to the men of Penuel, saying, "When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower."

10Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand men, all who were left of all the army of the children of the east; for there fell one hundred twenty thousand men who drew sword.

11And Gideon went up by the way of those who lived in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and struck the army, when the army was unsuspecting.

12Zebah and Zalmunna fled, and he pursued after them, and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and routed the entire army.

13Gideon the son of Joash returned from the battle from the ascent of Heres.

14He caught a young man of the men of Succoth, and inquired of him: and he described for him the princes of Succoth, and its elders, seventy-seven men.

15He came to the men of Succoth, and said, "Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, concerning whom you taunted me, saying, "Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your men who are weary?"

16He took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he disciplined the men of Succoth.

17He broke down the tower of Penuel, and killed the men of the city.

18Then he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, "What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?" They answered, "As you are, so were they; each one resembled the son of a king."

19He said, "They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the Lord lives, if you had saved them alive, I would not kill you."

20He said to Jether his firstborn, "Get up, and kill them." But the youth did not draw his sword; for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

21Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, "Rise up yourself, and kill us, for a man is judged by his strength." Gideon arose, and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on their camels' necks.

22Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, "Rule over us, both you, and your son, and your son's son also; for you have saved us out of the hand of Midian."

23Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the Lord shall rule over you."

24Gideon said to them, "I would make a request of you, that you would give me every man the earrings from his plunder." (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.)

25They answered, "We will willingly give them." They spread a garment, and every one of them threw an earring from his plunder.

26The weight of the golden earrings that he requested was one thousand and seven hundred pieces of gold, besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the purple clothing that was on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were about their camels' necks.

27Gideon made an ephod of it, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel prostituted themselves after it there; and it became a snare to Gideon, and to his house.

28So Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, and did not become a threat again. The land had rest forty years in the days of Gideon.

29Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and lived in his own house.

30Gideon had seventy sons conceived from his body; for he had many wives.

31His concubine who was in Shechem, she also bore him a son, and he named him Abimelech.

32Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33It happened, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and played the prostitute after the Baals, and made Baal Berith their god.

34The children of Israel did not remember the Lord their God, who had delivered them out of the hand of all their enemies on every side;

35neither did they show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shown to Israel.

John 5

1After these things, there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

2Now in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, "Bethesda," having five porches.

3In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed [waiting for the moving of the water;

4for an angel of the LORD went down at certain times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had.]

5A certain man was there, who had been sick for thirty-eight years.

6When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?"

7The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, another steps down before me."

8Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat, and walk."

9Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day.

10So the Jewish leaders said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat."

11He answered them, "He who made me well, the same said to me, 'Take up your mat, and walk.'"

12Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you to pick it up and walk?"

13But he who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place.

14Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you."

15The man went away, and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.

16For this cause the Jewish leaders persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the Sabbath.

17But Jesus answered them, "My Father is still working, so I am working, too."

18For this cause therefore the Jewish leaders sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

19Jesus therefore answered them, "Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise.

20For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel.

21For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires.

22For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son,

23that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

24"Truly, truly, I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.

25Truly, truly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear will live.

26For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself.

27He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.

28Do not marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice,

29and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.

30I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I do not seek my own will, but the will of the One who sent me.

31"If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid.

32It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true.

33You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

34But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved.

35He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

36But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me.

37The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form.

38You do not have his word living in you; because you do not believe him whom he sent.

39"You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.

40Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life.

41I do not receive glory from men.

42But I know you, that you do not have God's love in yourselves.

43I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.

44How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

45"Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope.

46For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me.

47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

Psalms 73

1 Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

2But as for me, my feet were almost gone. My steps had nearly slipped.

3For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4For there are no struggles in their death, but their strength is firm.

5They are free from burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men.

6Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment.

7Their eyes bulge with fat. Their minds pass the limits of conceit.

8They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression.

9They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth.

10Therefore their people return to them, and they drink up waters of abundance.

11They say, "How does God know? Is there knowledge in the Most High?"

12Behold, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches.

13Surely in vain I have cleansed my heart, and washed my hands in innocence,

14For all day long have I been plagued, and punished every morning.

15If I had said, "I will speak thus;" behold, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

16When I tried to understand this, it was too painful for me;

17Until I entered God's sanctuary, and considered their latter end.

18Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction.

19How they are suddenly destroyed! They are completely swept away with terrors.

20As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

21For my soul was grieved. I was embittered in my heart.

22I was so senseless and ignorant. I was a brute beast before you.

23Nevertheless, I am continually with you. You have held my right hand.

24You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.

25Who do I have in heaven? There is no one on earth who I desire besides you.

26My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

27For, behold, those who are far from you shall perish. You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you.

28But it is good for me to come close to God. I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

Proverbs 11

1A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but accurate weights are his delight.

2When pride comes, then comes shame, but with humility comes wisdom.

3The integrity of the upright shall guide them, but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.

4Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

5The righteousness of the blameless will direct his way, but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.

6The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them, but the unfaithful will be trapped by evil desires.

7When a wicked man dies, hope perishes, and expectation of power comes to nothing.

8A righteous person is delivered out of trouble, and the wicked takes his place.

9With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.

10When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices. When the wicked perish, there is shouting.

11By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

12One who despises his neighbor is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding holds his peace.

13One who brings gossip betrays a confidence, but one who is of a trustworthy spirit is one who keeps a secret.

14Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.

15He who is collateral for a stranger will suffer for it, but he who refuses pledges of collateral is secure.

16A gracious woman obtains honor, but violent men obtain riches.

17The merciful man does good to his own soul, but he who is cruel troubles his own flesh.

18Wicked people earn deceitful wages, but one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward.

19He who is truly righteous gets life. He who pursues evil gets death.

20Those who are perverse in heart are an abomination to the Lord, but those whose ways are blameless are his delight.

21Most certainly, the evil man will not be unpunished, but the seed of the righteous will be delivered.

22Like a gold ring in a pig's snout, is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.

23The desire of the righteous is only good. The expectation of the wicked is wrath.

24There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty.

25The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.

26People curse someone who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.

27He who diligently seeks good seeks favor, but he who searches after evil, it shall come to him.

28He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.

29He who troubles his own house shall inherit the wind. The foolish shall be servant to the wise of heart.

30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life. He who is wise wins souls.

31Behold, the righteous shall be repaid in the earth; how much more the wicked and the sinner!
