I Samuel 5
1Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.
2The Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3When they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord. They took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4When they arose early on the next day morning, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold. Only Dagon's torso was intact.
5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any who come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, to this day.
6But the hand of the Lord was heavy on them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and struck them with tumors, even Ashdod and its borders.
7When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, "The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us; for his hand is severe on us, and on Dagon our god."
8They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, "What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?" They answered, "Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried over to Gath." They carried the ark of the God of Israel there.
9It was so, that after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great confusion: and he struck the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors broke out on them.
10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. It happened, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, "They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people."
11They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, "Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it not kill us and our people." For there was a deadly confusion throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12The men who did not die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
I Samuel 6
1The ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months.
2The Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, "What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Show us with which we shall send it to its place."
3They said, "If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it empty; but by all means return him a trespass offering: then you shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you."
4Then they said, "What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him?" They said, "Five golden tumors, and five golden mice, for the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
5Therefore you shall make images of your tumors, and images of your mice that mar the land; and you shall give glory to the God of Israel: perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land.
6Why then do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When he had worked wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
7"Now therefore take and prepare yourselves a new cart, and two milk cows, on which there has come no yoke; and tie the cows to the cart, and bring their calves home from them;
8and take the ark of the Lord, and lay it on the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which you return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by its side; and send it away, that it may go.
9And watch; if it goes up by the way of its own territory to Beth Shemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us."
10The men did so, and took two milk cows, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home;
11and they put the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their tumors.
12The cows took the straight way by the way to Beth Shemesh; they went along the highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them to the territory of Beth Shemesh.
13They of Beth Shemesh were reaping their wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it.
14The cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there, where there was a great stone: and they split the wood of the cart, and offered up the cows for a burnt offering to the Lord.
15The Levites took down the ark of the Lord, and the coffer that was with it, in which the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great stone: and the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to the Lord.
16When the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
17These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned for a trespass offering to the Lord: for Ashdod one, for Gaza one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one;
18and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of fortified cities and of country villages, even to the great stone, whereon they set down the ark of the Lord. That stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19He struck of the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, he struck of the people fifty thousand seventy men; and the people mourned, because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.
20The men of Beth Shemesh said, "Who is able to stand before the Lord, this holy God? To whom shall he go up from us?"
21They sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath Jearim, saying, "The Philistines have brought back the ark of the Lord; come down, and bring it up to yourselves."
I Samuel 7
1The men of Kiriath Jearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
2It happened, from the day that the ark stayed in Kiriath Jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
3Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, "If you do return to the Lord with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts to the Lord, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines."
4Then the children of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only.
5Samuel said, "Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you to the Lord."
6They gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, "We have sinned against the Lord." Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah.
7When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8The children of Israel said to Samuel, "Do not cease to cry to the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines."
9Samuel took a suckling lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt offering to the Lord: and Samuel cried to the Lord for Israel; and the Lord answered him.
10As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day on the Philistines, and confused them; and they were struck down before Israel.
11The men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and struck them, until they came under Beth Kar.
12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "The Lord helped us until now."
13So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the territory of Israel. The hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory out of the hand of the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16He went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places.
17His return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel: and he built there an altar to the Lord.
John 13
1Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
2During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him,
3Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and was going to God,
4arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
5Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
6Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?"
7Jesus answered him, "You do not know what I am doing now, but you will understand later."
8Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I do not wash you, you have no part with me."
9Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!"
10Jesus said to him, "Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you."
11For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, "You are not all clean."
12So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?
13You call me, 'Teacher' and 'Lord.' You say so correctly, for so I am.
14If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.
15For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.
16Truly, truly, I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him.
17If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
18I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'
19From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he.
20Truly, truly, I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me."
21When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, "Truly, truly, I tell you that one of you will betray me."
22The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke.
23One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus' breast.
24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks."
25He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus' breast, asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
26Jesus therefore answered, "It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
27After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, "What you do, do quickly."
28Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him.
29For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, "Buy what things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.
30Therefore, having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night.
31When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him.
32If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately.
33Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jewish leaders, 'Where I am going, you cannot come,' so now I tell you.
34A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also must love one another.
35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
36Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow afterwards."
37Peter said to him, "Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
38Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I tell you, the rooster won't crow until you have denied me three times.
Psalms 81
1 Sing aloud to God, our strength! Make a joyful shout to the God of Jacob!
2Raise a song, and bring here the tambourine, the pleasant lyre with the harp.
3Blow the trumpet at the New Moon, at the full moon, on our feast day.
4For it is a statute for Israel, an ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5He appointed it in Joseph for a testimony, when he went out over the land of Egypt, I heard a language that I did not know.
6"I removed his shoulder from the burden. His hands were freed from the basket.
7You called in trouble, and I delivered you. I answered you in the secret place of thunder. I tested you at the waters of Meribah." Selah.
8"Hear, my people, and I will testify to you, Israel, if you would listen to me!
9There shall be no strange god in you, neither shall you worship any foreign god.
10I am the Lord, your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
11But my people did not listen to my voice. Israel desired none of me.
12So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.
13Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!
14I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their adversaries.
15The haters of the Lord would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever.
16But he would have also fed them with the finest of the wheat. I will satisfy you with honey out of the rock."
Proverbs 19
1Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is perverse in his lips and is a fool.
2It isn't good to have zeal without knowledge; nor being hasty with one's feet and missing the way.
3The foolishness of man subverts his way; his heart rages against the Lord.
4Wealth adds many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend.
5A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who pours out lies shall not go free.
6Many will entreat the favor of a ruler, and everyone is a friend to a man who gives gifts.
7All the relatives of the poor shun him: how much more do his friends avoid him! He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone.
8He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who keeps understanding shall find good.
9A false witness shall not be unpunished. He who utters lies shall perish.
10Delicate living is not appropriate for a fool, much less for a servant to have rule over princes.
11The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger. It is his glory to overlook an offense.
12The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass.
13A foolish son is the calamity of his father. A wife's quarrels are a continual dripping.
14House and riches are an inheritance from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
15Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. The idle soul shall suffer hunger.
16He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, but he who is contemptuous in his ways shall die.
17He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord; he will reward him.
18Discipline your son, for there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death.
19A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty, for if you rescue him, you must do it again.
20Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter end.
21There are many plans in a man's heart, but the Lord's counsel will prevail.
22That which makes a man to be desired is his kindness. A poor man is better than a liar.
23The fear of the Lord leads to life, then contentment; he rests and will not be touched by trouble.
24The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.
25Flog a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke one who has understanding, and he will gain knowledge.
26He who robs his father and drives away his mother, is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.
27If you stop listening to instruction, my son, you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28A corrupt witness mocks justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down iniquity.
29Penalties are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the backs of fools.
