The Armor of God
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
— Ephesians 6:11 (KJV)
Paul uses the image of a Roman soldier's equipment to describe the spiritual resources God gives every believer. Five pieces are defensive; one — the Sword of the Spirit — is offensive. Together, they equip you for every spiritual battle.
1. Belt of Truth
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth.” — Ephesians 6:14a
Truth holds everything together — like a Roman soldier's belt secured all other armor. Without truth, everything falls apart. Know God's truth and live honestly.
2. Breastplate of Righteousness
“Having on the breastplate of righteousness.” — Ephesians 6:14b
The breastplate protects the heart. Living righteously — right standing with God through Christ and right living through obedience — guards your most vital organ.
3. Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” — Ephesians 6:15
Roman soldiers wore studded sandals for sure footing. The gospel gives you stability and readiness to go wherever God sends you with His message of peace.
4. Shield of Faith
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” — Ephesians 6:16
The Roman shield was large enough to hide behind. Faith extinguishes every attack from the enemy — doubt, fear, temptation, accusation. It's your primary defense.
5. Helmet of Salvation
“And take the helmet of salvation.” — Ephesians 6:17a
The helmet protects the mind. Knowing you are saved — secure in Christ — protects your thoughts from despair, confusion, and the enemy's lies about your identity.
6. Sword of the Spirit
“And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” — Ephesians 6:17b
The only offensive weapon in the armor. God's Word is alive, sharp, and powerful. Jesus Himself used Scripture to defeat temptation. Know it, memorize it, wield it.
