Names of God in the Bible
In the Bible, God reveals Himself through many names — each one unveiling a different facet of His character, power, and relationship with us. Learning His names deepens our understanding of who He truly is.
Elohim
“God, Creator”
The first name used for God in the Bible. Plural in form, hinting at the Trinity. Speaks of God's power and majesty as Creator.
“In the beginning God [Elohim] created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1
Yahweh (YHWH)
“The Lord, I AM”
God's most sacred personal name, revealed to Moses. It means the self-existent, eternal One who simply IS.
“I AM THAT I AM.” — Exodus 3:14
El Shaddai
“God Almighty”
Emphasizes God's supreme power over all things. He is more than enough to fulfill every promise.
“I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.” — Genesis 17:1
Adonai
“Lord, Master”
Acknowledges God's authority and lordship. When we call Him Adonai, we submit to His rule over our lives.
“O Lord GOD, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness.” — Deuteronomy 3:24
Jehovah Jireh
“The Lord Will Provide”
Named by Abraham after God provided a ram instead of Isaac. God sees our needs before we do and provides.
“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh.” — Genesis 22:14
Jehovah Rapha
“The Lord Who Heals”
God heals body, mind, and soul. He is the ultimate physician for every kind of brokenness.
“I am the Lord that healeth thee.” — Exodus 15:26
Jehovah Nissi
“The Lord My Banner”
God is our banner of victory in battle. Under His banner we are protected and triumphant.
“And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi.” — Exodus 17:15
Jehovah Shalom
“The Lord Is Peace”
God is not just peaceful — He IS peace. In His presence, anxiety and conflict give way to wholeness.
“Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovahshalom.” — Judges 6:24
Jehovah Rohi
“The Lord My Shepherd”
God tenderly guides, feeds, protects, and leads His people like a shepherd caring for beloved sheep.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1
Jehovah Tsidkenu
“The Lord Our Righteousness”
We cannot be righteous on our own. God Himself becomes our righteousness through Christ.
“And this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” — Jeremiah 23:6
Jehovah Shammah
“The Lord Is There”
God's presence never leaves His people. Wherever you are, He is already there.
“And the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.” — Ezekiel 48:35
El Elyon
“God Most High”
God is above all other powers, authorities, and beings. Nothing and no one is higher.
“I will praise the Lord according to his righteousness: and will sing praise to the name of the Lord most high.” — Psalm 7:17
El Roi
“The God Who Sees”
Named by Hagar in the wilderness. God sees every person, especially the overlooked and forgotten.
“Thou God seest me.” — Genesis 16:13
El Olam
“The Everlasting God”
God exists outside of time. He was before all things and will be after all things end.
“The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary.” — Isaiah 40:28
Abba
“Father, Daddy”
The intimate name Jesus used for God. Through Christ, we too can approach God as a loving Father.
“And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee.” — Mark 14:36
